Deep Water was composed for the Minnesota Chinese Music Ensemble in 1993. It creates a deep meditative mode often described as in the Buddhist tradition. Deep Water exists in three versions, two of which are on this page: the original for Chinese ensemble, and a fusion version that replaces the di and erhu with violin and clarinet. A third version is for western ensemble consisting of violin, clarinet, piano, cello, temple bell and large drum.
