MacDances is a 4-movement dance suite in the form of a Baroque suite of dances. The movements all use a particular characteristic common to traditional Baroque dances: the first movement, Prelude, has an improvisatory character; the second movement, Allemande, uses the standard common time along with a “Germanic” marching character; Movement three, Sarebande, is in triple time and employs a strong second beat; The fourth movement, Jig, is in compound meter and imitates a Scottish jig. MacDances was commissioned by the Macalester College Orchestra, conducted by Mark Manderano.
