“Cutting Quartals” for string quartet was composed in 2015, and premiered in November 2016. It relies heavily, though not exclusively, on quartal harmony which uses intervals of a fourth, rather than a third, to create harmony and melody. Written in the style of a scherzo, “Cutting Quartals” was intended to be part of a larger multi-movement work for string quartet. This is its first inclusion as part of a MCCF program. I am very grateful for the gifted musicians who performed this piece: Otis Harriel and Kevin Rogers on violin, Taija Warbelow on viola, and Doug Machiz on cello. -ry
