Bird Over Water was written for the flute players of the Minnesota Chinese Music Ensemble.  The image of birds flying over the water is suggested through the combination of two Chinese folk songs: “The Little Yellow Birds” is used mostly in the upper voices, and “Picking the Lotus” is used in the lower voices representing the water.  This version of Bird Over Water is only the latest in a series of revisions designed to fit the ensemble members at the time of each performance.
