Spiral was commissioned by the Bush Faculty Development Program of Macalester College.  The piece was composed for the St. Paul-based Zeitgeist Ensemble for New Music in 1986.  Personnel shifts prevented it from being premiered until 2010.  Spiral begins with a cadenza-like opening, gathers focus and energy, and progresses to an intense and joyful minimalist textured conclusion.
