Angels in America is a suite of movements composed as incidental music for a Macalester College production of the play, Angels in America, by Tony Kushner. In the play there is reference to the sound of a viola, and that, along with the emotive qualities of both viola and cello, lead to the choice of instruments. The last movement, Prior and Lewis, is named for the two protagonists at the center of the action.   Any sub-set of the movements may be performed, although the composer suggests a “suite” using movements 3, 5, 2, and 7, in that order.
