Colors began with the composition of “Blue Piano” and the association of the color blue with the “blues” idiom. The music that came to me definitely used a swinging jazz element, and eventually two blues choruses near the end of the movement. From there I went to Red and saw it as a color of anxiety and speed: Red Rush. Purple (Nocturne) brought night memories to mind, having listened to late night music on my first radio (age 10) in the SF Bay area, and the many renderings of “Deep Purple” on KGO’s “Music Till Dawn.” Green brought to mind the jigs of Scotland and Ireland; how can they not be “green”?
